Who is Tems?

Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria to a Nigerian mother and a British father. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to the United Kingdom.

When she was five, her parents separated, and she moved to Ilupeju, then to Lekki, then to Ajah. At school, her music teacher noticed her and she learned the piano, and she practised singing with her brother’s guitar accompaniment.

Tems recorded Mr Rebel in 2018, and in August 2019, she released Try Me” , which is a major hit on YouTube, with more than 6.7 million views.

DJ Edu selected her as one of his ten artists to watch in the year 2020, and that year he invited her to remix Know Your Worth with fellow Nigerian Davido.

She has had another massive hit with her second single Damages from her For Broken Ears EP, which reached number 6 on the newly released “TurnTable Top 50” chart (a Nigerian chart) and garnered 6.3 million views on YouTube.

The song Essence, her collaboration with Wizkid, earned her a place at the top of the BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart at the end of January 2021.

Tems and fellow Nigerian artist Omah Lay were arrested in Uganda in December 2020 while performing at a live event under COVID-19 safety laws. They were subsequently released and the charges were dropped.
