Somethin’ Else, one of the BBC’s largest independent producers of podcasts and audio, has been acquired by Sony Music Entertainment.
Somethin’ Else, the UK’s largest independent podcast and audio producer, and one of the BBC’s biggest independent producers has been acquired by Sony Music Entertainment.
The deal will create a podcast division within Sony Music headed by Steve Ackerman, chief content officer and vice-chairman; and Jez Nelson, founder, executive chairman, and CEO of Somethin’ Else.
Sony Music is creating a new global podcast division that will be led by Somethin’ Else’s two top executives: Steve Ackerman, chief content officer and vice-chairman, and Jez Nelson, founder, executive chairman, and CEO.
The two are now co-heads of global podcasts for Sony Music, jointly overseeing SME’s podcast strategy.
Sony Music Entertainment executives Dennis Kooker, global digital business and sale president, and Tom Mackay, premium content president, will supervise Ackerman’s New York operations, and Nelson will oversee the U.K.-based podcasting operation.
Sony has established several dozen podcasts over the past two years and invested in podcast ventures including Adam Davidson and Laura Mayer’s Three Uncanny Four and Neon Hum.

Using Somethin’ Else’s production and collaborative expertise, Sony Music plans to develop podcasts across a variety of genres and expand its content partnerships.
Sony Music is expanding its relationship with Somethin’ Else, bringing their best-in-class production capabilities and expertise into the Sony Music family.
Mackay continued, “Under Steve and Jez’s leadership, we now have the ability to expand our range of collaboration opportunities for the podcast community globally and leverage that strength to grow a robust slate of new internal projects.”
Spotify, Amazon, and Apple have been acquiring podcast producers and platforms to capitalize on a boom in audio listening and diversify away from a reliance on streaming music.
Taking over the Somethin’ Else TV and social media business, Sony Music will add to the company’s creative and strategy department, which already supplies content for clients such as the BRIT Awards, Sky, the Economist, and Red Bull.
