Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa, a former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Masaka, died of COVID-19 as confirmed on Wednesday evening.

In a statement via his social media, Kizza Besigye considered the fallen Bishop Kaggwa to be an absolutely strong leader and a true man of God, who would be greatly missed by the nation.
“A great priest, an absolutely strong leader, and, truly a man of God, Bishop John Baptist returns to the Lord. A great loss to the country” read part of Besigye’s statement before sending condolences to his family and the entire Church Brotherhood.
“My heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the family, Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga and the entire Catholic Church. “
Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa, a former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Masaka, died of COVID-19 as confirmed on Wednesday evening.
Diocesan Communications Director Rev. Fr Ronald Mayanja said the deceased was battling a deadly virus that he contracted two months ago.
“It is true that the bishop is with the Lord; he died of COVID-19, which he had been fighting for two months,” Mayanja said.
His death comes at a time when hospitals across the country are already overwhelmed by rising coronavirus cases. The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced 94 new cases from COVID-19 tests conducted on January 19, 2021.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 38,628. Of these, 305 were infected with the virus and 13,413 recovered from it.
Who is Bishop Kaggwa?
Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, 78, was born on March 23, 1943, in Bulenga, Busiro County, Wakiso District, in the Buganda region of Uganda.
He attended Lubaga Boys’ Primary School from 1952 until he completed Primary 6 in 1957. Then in 1958 Kisubi joined the Minor Seminary. He studied Latin while in Giuseppe. Then he studied philosophy at Katigondo Major Seminary.
In 1965, he was sent on a scholarship to the Pontifical City University in Rome. In Rome in May 1970, the late Bishop Kaggwa had been ordained a deacon.
On December 12, 1971, at the age of 28, was ordained a priest in Rome. At his death, Bishop Kaggwa received a philosophical degree in the field of canon law and secularism Law, issued by the Pontifical City University.
Other Achievements for more than two years, from December 19, 1994, to January 10, 1998, Bishop Kaggwa served as Coadjutor Bishop of Masaka, Uganda. He later served as Bishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masaka.
He retired on 16 April 2018 at the age of 75. Later replaced by Bishop Severus Jjumba on July 6, 2019.
